Tiny highlights from the opening chapter of ‘23….Borrowdale walks, endless rain, a frosty morning Coniston run, slow mornings, a night at Coniston YHA & a hike on the Cumbria Way, #78 Holme Fell, windy Latrigg & January’s bracing Rydal dip ✨

Here’s to February days ✨

This year, I’m focussing my monthly dips in just This year, I’m focussing my monthly dips in just one location rather than all over the Lake District like last year.

Rydal Water is the nearest lake to me, the small, relatively shallow lake that sits between Ambleside and Grasmere.

The idea of returning to the same spot is to watch the wildlife and seasons change, on the banks, in the water, on the hills.

It’s safe to say I’d been putting the first dip of 2023 off a little, waiting for a sunny, slightly warmer day.

But alas, time had run out and yesterday under muted January skies, I found myself alone on the southern bank next to the gnarled old oak tree still bare and structural from winter stripping down to my swimsuit.

The mallard ducks and Canadian geese eyed me suspiciously as I waded in, the cold water stinging my feet beneath my sports sandals. And then in, a quick 10 seconds breathing deeply and noticing the tiny patches of snow still dotting the central fells.

To shore to warm up, and then another 10-second immersion before piling the clothes back on and jumping on the bus home 💦

Like choosing a favourite album or song, picking y Like choosing a favourite album or song, picking your favourite Lake District hill can be tough.

Will it be one of the classics with precarious ridges such as Helvellyn or Blencathra? Or the rocky peak of England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike?

For me, there will always be one special place I always come back to: Latrigg

The path isn’t particularly challenging or technical - you can reach the summit by an even shorter walk from the small car park from near the summit.

But it’s a hill that holds countless memories.

My first Lakeland hill I climbed on a warm evening in April 2019 when I was still nursing a broken heart and my confidence felt fragile and low. My first night run, illuminated by headtorch that we switched off at the summit and saw the moon shine bright over the neighbouring Lonscale. A team run with work colleagues to round off the end of the season with swigs of hip flask brandy at the top. Summer solstice sunsets. Lighting a candle for the winter solstice. A last run before moving to the central Lakes.

Sometimes the smallest hills can leave the biggest memories ⛰

How about you, do you have a favourite Lake District hills?

Picking where I left off hiking the Cumbria Way la Picking where I left off hiking the Cumbria Way last year!

After a night at YHA Coniston, I set off solo into the hills, my true happy place where I hardly saw a soul (apart from at the often busy Tarn Hows)

A detour over Holme Fell for Wainwright #78 before descending into Skelwith Bridge jogging to predictable catch the last bus home with minutes to spare 🥾⛰️

A hello/re-introduction for the first chapter of 2 A hello/re-introduction for the first chapter of 2023…🙋🏼‍♀️

I’m Rebecca and I live in Ambleside in the heart of the Lake District, where I’ve found a home since April 2019 after years of travelling.

My love for travel probably began when I was about 5, when I used to trace maps and flags out my children's atlas, and loved researching countries.

I have tended to prioritise roaming and working abroad to climbing a career ladder but most of my jobs have involved food of some sort - cooking in (five different) ski chalets in the French Alps, running a cafe in the Shetland Islands, pastry cheffing in a vineyard in New Zealand. I ran a monthly cake stall back in Nottingham for 2 years before the Alps drew me back for another season, followed by a South American adventure which led to heartbreak and a spontaneous move to the Lake District where I began writing with more heart and finding my voice.

But these are just the shiny highlights - many of these adventures and changes were the product of periods of uncertainty, anxiety, heartbreak, and a sense of feeling lost. We so often need those lows though, to appreciate the highs.

I began to Look With New Eyes back in 2015, a sporadic hobby at first to document my travels and now to share my personal and travel stories from the Lake District. My time is split between working part-time, freelance writing for local businesses and spending time in my beloved Lakeland fells.

So, that’s my little story, what is yours? Which places, journeys, or trips have made you who you are today?
