Sweet moments from a cool rainy (and a little bit Sweet moments from a cool rainy (and a little bit snowy!) March from walks in the Langdale Valley, unexpected snow, a fell race in Elterwater, Forty Farms at the Windermere Jetty Museum and lots of lovely daffodils 🌼

Observations from my March lake dip at Rydal Water Observations from my March lake dip at Rydal Water…..

* Another dip under grey skies punctuated with spots of rain, a cool wind rippling the surfaces. Canadian geese honking on the neighbouring shore, birds chattering in the trees.

This would be the last month the view still felt relatively muted and bare before those tiny buds from the trees on the shoreline burst to life

The water temperature still felt bracing. March has felt cooler than previous years, with a spell of snow in the middle of the month and continuously grey and rainy skies. Little sunshine to warm the waters.

As I return to the shore after 3 x 10-second submersions, a family speaking a language I don’t understand approaches the shoreline, the children climbing on the old oak tree and posing for pictures. The magic of my time alone the water broken. A return to the tourist season.

A dip on the last day of the month, on a Friday, on the last day of the first quarter of the year, on the last day of term before the tourist season really kicks off tomorrow. These last two weeks of March have felt an energy shift - leaving one job to begin another, our rented house coming under new ownership (electricians, skips to remove outside debris, new locks on the doors; all these people coming and going), my housemate using his holiday to transform our overgrown garden.

A dip that felt like the perfect full stop before the next chapter of the year ✨

Celebrating climbing Wainwright number 80 on top o Celebrating climbing Wainwright number 80 on top of the iconic Old Man of Coniston on a stunning spring day ☀️

I started from Coniston, climbing up towards the old Coppermines where remnants of the old shelters and machinery remain.

A quick lunch at the stunning Low Water before the last push up the steep steps up to the summit where a lady with a dog in a Harris tweed jacket snapped my picture next to the trig point with views out to Morecambe Bay and the southern fells.

A quick out and back to Brim Fell before a steep ascent and descent again to Dow Crag before making my final descent via Goat Water 🐐

I took lots of breaks to enable early school holiday crowds to disperse, allowing me to enjoy the last straight along the old Walna Scar Road bathed in golden evening light alone.

This was actually my 2nd time up the Old Man (although not counting it in the current Wainwright stats). Looking through my Facebook memories, it was actually 10 years ago this summer since my first ascent, on what was only my second visit to the Lakes.

Who would have thought, that 10 years later I’d be calling this place home for nearly 4 years 🎉

The unexpected snow days of March continue ❄️ The unexpected snow days of March continue ❄️

After a milky sunrise, I look up from my bed, curled up reading, to see fat snowflakes falling from the sky.

They come and go all day, a dance between snow, sleet and rain.

Settling, a world temporarily transformed and then suddenly meeting away as fast as it came 💙
