Exploring Cumbria beyond the Lake District! A 7 Exploring Cumbria beyond the Lake District!

A 7 mile clifftop walk from the harbour town of Whitehaven to the seaside village of St Bee’s. The route takes in….

🏭 Old landmarks such as a mining chimney from Cumbria's industrial past

🧱Towering sandstone cliffs

🌸Wild flowers dotting the coast in summer

🕊Nesting seabirds in the cliffs at the RSPB reserve from May - July

💡The old lighthouse station and lookout points from WW2

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇮🇲 Stunning views over to the Southern Scotland coastline and the Isle of Man

🌊Arriving in the sandy beach village of sleepy St Bee’s

Walk details: Allow 3-4 hours as the path has a lot of undulation and steps in places - a moderate level of fitness is required and decent footwear is recommended for the uneven surface

Save this walk for your next trip to Cumbria!

Looking back on my twenties, I had an unfailing se Looking back on my twenties, I had an unfailing sense of breezing into new opportunities or adventures with hardly a care in the world.

Applying to work in a ski resort despite having never skied in my life, booking a solo, one way ticket to New Zealand to travel and work and applying to multiple work exchanges in places like Poland to teach English and Portugal to work at a surf hostel.

I was lucky enough to find a way, always finding my feet. No anxieties of what if it goes wrong? What if I get ill? What if I fail?

I simply sailed in without a second thought.

In my thirties, my ship has hit a few rocks - of anxiety, of heartbreak, of misdirection, that unshakeable confidence now has chips and scars.

In a strange way, it’s so often the other way around for many people, an unsure twenties leads to many people finding more confidence in their thirties but I sure feel a little more weathered by life now, more likely to think about the what if’s.

The last few years, I felt a longing for that same carefree person I was back in my early twenties. Mourning the person I used to be.

But through reflection, I’ve come to accept it’s a part of who I am, that the scars and bumps in the road teach the deepest of lessons and though the what ifs still creep in, that confidence to try, to jump in still runs deep someone within.

A summer hike & wild camping adventure to the far A summer hike & wild camping adventure to the far eastern fringes of the Lake District, at Haweswater Reservoir.

I felt a thrill of excitement driving along the shoreline having met my friend Amy in Penrith. Haweswater is the only ‘lake’ I’m yet to visit here. There is only one road in and one road out or a hike across the mountains.

The sky was cloudiness, thick with a July heatwave as we set off to climb two of the most easterly Wainwrights, Branstree (my 72nd) and Selside Pike (73) catching up on life and discussing future plans as we sweated our ways to the summit.

Feasting on homemade flapjack at the wind shelter on Selside Pike, the clouds drifted over but rays escape like disco lights on the silky water.

Back at the car, we repack our bags with camping kit, this time heading south. My legs are treacle like after the previous hike; my bag feeling like it was full of lead weights. I felt like giving up, heading back to the car for an easy night at home but bargain with myself to carry on.

It’s worth the effort.

We camp on the edge of a tarn, the towering peak of Mardale Ill Bell in our shadow. I’m thankful for Amy’s energy - to pitch the tent, heat the bean chilli she’d made and boil water for steaming hot chocolate.

Just before bedding down for the night, I take a moment to pause. To feel the elemental simplicity of wild camping in the mountains, stripped down to your bare needs - food, water, rest…. all without the distractions of modern life ✨
