🍂 Welcoming autumn with a run shuffle to Rydal 🍂 Welcoming autumn with a run shuffle to Rydal for my September dip. Pond skaters gliding, acorns bobbing, first light on the fells. The old oak tree still steadfastly green.

And just as I retreated to the shoreline, the cloud rolled in and found myself at the heart of the cloud inversion….

A stunning way to begin the new season 🍂🍂

⛰️1 . Hallin Fell near Ullswater at 388m
⛰️2. High Rigg near Keswick at 357m
⛰️3. Latterbarrow near Hawkshead at 245m

September summertime last week on the Langdale Pik September summertime last week on the Langdale Pikes to hit 96-99 on the Wainwright adventures.

I felt strangely nervous before this one - I’ve hiked 80% of my Wainwright’s solo but always feel a tad nervous on steeper and higher routes 😳

First bus down to New Dungeon Ghyll and up towards Stickle Tarn, veering off the popular, most direct route so I can amble along at my own pace without feeling followed 😆

After a quick lunch, it was time to tackle Pavey Arc up the ‘easier’ route - hands on rock at time (as I’m tiny and the backpack unbalances me haha!) but made it up and wow what a view! Trotted on for an easy bag of Thunacar Knott, through a boggy section and onto the scrambly knoll of Pike O’Stickle.

By this point, energy was wearing thin and I’d realised I’d missed out Harrison Stickle, which I’d planned to also climb to reach my 100th Wainwright.

Instead, I decided to save it for another day and just head up Loft Crag instead - finally beginning to relax a little!

I took the longer descent down off Loft Crag - which as usual took me a little longer than anticipated and I ended up missing the last bus out of the valley 😬

Fear not though, I turned to my trusty hitchhiking and got a ride with the second car that went by. Roger from North Wales had been marshalling the triathlon up on Scarfed Pike.

He told me with excitement that he was doing his Mountain Leader Qualification at the age of 53 after falling in love with the mountains in his 40’s

A sweet reminder that no matter how slow, fast, old or young you are, the mountains are for everyone ⛰️

💦 Notes from last week's monthly dip at Rydal - 💦 Notes from last week's monthly dip at Rydal - August edition

On the last day of the month, a real summer meets autumn feel is in the morning air. Arriving at the edge of the water, I watch two herons dance around each other in the river that feeds into the lake.

The reeds and lily pads to the left of my dip spot are starting to wane and die back as the days grow shorter.

Nab Scar, the hill behind Rydal Water has shifted from emerald green to copper and gold as the bracken has begun to die back.

The water makes me gasp initially - I’ve spent so little time immersed here this summer than in previous years. But I count to 20 to acclimatise before doing a tiny swim back to the shoreline.

The morning sunshine glitters on the deep green leaves of my favourite stooped over and knarled old oak tree.

When I’m in the water I see no one. A moment to myself after a busy, chaotic summer ✨

I’m excited for the return of my monthly newslet I’m excited for the return of my monthly newsletter on Friday after a little summer break!

The letter will feature a return of Inspired by the Lakes, my short Q&A with a different person each month who has been inspired by the landscape of the Lake District.

The series has previously featured artists, writers, runners and indie business owners.

I love hearing the stories of how this landscape plays a part in different people's lives - the stories of connection, creativity, dedication and memory.

I’m kicking off the series by chatting with walking artist, PhD student and mountain leader, @jessica.emsley.artist who I met at her fantastic outdoor art workshop as part of Kendal Mountain Festival last year.

The letter and Q&A will be going out to subscribers on Friday - If you’d like to subscribe you can follow the link in my bio - I’d for you to join my Lake District adventure 😊

Also, if you have been inspired by the Lakes and would like to take part in a future Q&A, do get in touch!
