Belting day out above Loweswater yesterday for Wai

Belting day out above Loweswater yesterday for Wainwright #87 up Burnbank Fell in tropical Cumbrian sunshine with my pal Amy.

The route began in the shady cool of Holme Wood, past the waterfall and out onto the open fell side with views over to the coast (despite the sea mist rolling in momentarily).

An off-piste, straightforward route down, a quick dip in Loweswater to cool off and a cheeky half pint of stout (yeah, old man ) at the classic Kirkstile Inn before strolling through Lanthwaite Wood to catch the (very late) bus back to Keswick.

A much needed solo birthday escape to Eskdale in the wilds of the Western Lakes - using public transport!

Two buses from Ambleside took me to Workington on the coast where I hopped on the train that travels around the underrated Cumbrian coast. I jumped off at Ravensglass where I picked up the @rersteam La’al Ratty steam train which chugs into the heart of this remote part of the Lakes.

Hidden Japanese gardens, evening fell walks, 3 tarns, my 86th (not 84 as I wrote on my hand 🙈) Wainwright up Illigill Head, red squirrels in YHA Eskdale’s back garden, and a double birthday dip in the River Esk and on St Bee’s beach on my return.

A fine old way to welcome in 38 🎉

April in the Lakes - two early Wainwright adventures to Ullswater and the Honister Pass, epic hot cross buns from Apple Pie in Ambleside, wild garlic and daffodils, a flurry of snow on the hills, outdoor hot chocolates at Dora’s, a brief podcast appearance, the first alfresco dinner of the year, the zebra horse, spring lambs and blossom, a day trip to Lancaster and a sunset dip at Rydal ✨

April’s monthly dip at Rydal - a brief encounter between a day out in Lancaster and the domestic duties of home.

Time to be present and in the moment. Time just for me.

A setting sun, a trio of Canadian geese flying overhead, the bright new green of the leaves unfurling next to the shoreline (although my favourite oak was still sleeping), and sunny yellow marsh flowers in bloom.

The water was still a bracing shock - April has remained cool - but the seconds with shoulders immersed in the cloudy water increased.

A peanut butter brownie was devoured as a reward, a brief chat with a more serious swimmer before pulling on wet sandals and hot-footing it back to the bus stop before jumping on board for the brief trip home ✨
